Spondylolisthesis Treatment is the type of treatment given to the patients who are suffering from the disease named spondylolisthesis. Spondylolisthesis is nothing but the pain caused in the vertebral region that is caused because of the slipping of one of the vertebra away from other vertebrae.
When the vertebra slips forward then it is called as the anterolisthesis and when the vertebra slips backwards when compared with the other vertebra then it is called as retrolisthesis. This disease spondylolisthesis may lead to the narrowing of the spiral canal.
This may also lead to the compression of the exiting nerve roots and cause the deformity of the spine. There are five types of spondylolisthesis. They are Dysplastic spondylolisthesis, Isthmic spondylolisthesis, Degenerative spondylolisthesis, Traumatic spondylolisthesis and Pathologic spondylolisthesis.
This is most common disease that comes as the back pain in younger age persons. Degenerative spondylolisthesis often occurs at the age of above 40. Dysplastic spondylolisthesis is also called as the congenital spondylolisthesis. This type of disease often found at the person right from the birth.
This is the result of the abnormal bone formation during the birth. This abnormal arrangement of vertebrae may lead to the slipping of the vertebra. Isthmic spondylolisthesis is the type in which the vertebra becomes fractured due to stress. Degenerative spondylolisthesis is the most common type of spondylolisthesis which occurs due to aging.
Due to aging the cushions between the vertebrae loses water and becomes less spongy and also reduces the ability to resist the movement by the vertebrae. Traumatic spondylolisthesis is the type of spondylolisthesis in which the injury in the vertebra leads to the spinal fracture or slippage of the vertebra.
Pathologic spondylolisthesis is the type of spondylolisthesis in which the vertebra is affected due to some infections and this weekens the spinal card. This is due to infections such as osteoporosis, an infection or the tumor.
Spondylolisthesis Treatment includes several factors such as age, overall health, the extent of the vertebral slip, and the severity of the disease. The most common treatment offered is the conservative treatment. The patient should take rest and should not involve in any of the sports activities until the problem gets cured.
The non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen and naproxen are being recommended by the doctors. This will reduce the pain and also reduces the chance of inflammation. If this does not provide relief to the patients then the stronger medications should be preferred.
The physical therapy treatment will help to increase pain free movement and also improve the flexibility and muscle strength. Periodic X rays should be taken to analyze whether the bone slippage is continuing or not. Physical therapy treatment is nothing but the stabilization exercises.
These exercises will strengthen the abdominal and back muscles. This will minimize the spine movement. If the pain seems to continue and if the spine is still slipping and is not being cured by the conservative treatment then the surgery should be done. This surgery will stabilize the spine where the vertebra has slipped out of place and also increases the person’s ability to function.
